Repairs have begun on the bridge that carries Route 37 over Jefferson Boulevard and motorists should expect lane closures into autumn, the state Department of Transportation announced today.
The 47-year-old bridge is structurally deficient and the DOT said it restricted travel from four lanes to two on Jefferson Boulevard beginning at noon today.
The bridge itself will remain open during construction, but this fall, it will also be subject to travel restrictions and lane closures "will be needed later in the year when the contractor repairs the bridge's joints," said DOT spokesman Charles St. Martin III in a release.
Cardi Corporation has the $1.3 million construction contract with the state. The bridge's two piers will be rebuilt along with "other numerous improvements."
