A man's life was saved Wednesday by the quick actions of state police and two Rhode Island residents, including a man from Cranston.

Around 3:30 p.m., Newport Police said they received several 911 calls that a man was pushing a bicycle on the Newport Pell Bridge.

Trooper Andrew Carter responded and said when he got out of the cruiser, the man tried to leap over the bridge railing.

Matthew Ferreira of Cranston and Timothy Banks of Portsmouth saw the incident and got out of their cars to help police.  The trooper, along with Ferreira and Banks, pulled the man back over the railing, saving his life. The man was transported to Newport Hospital.

Colonel Steven G. O’Donnell commended Carter, Ferreira and Banks for their swift and courageous action.
