Johnston Police charged a 39-year-old Cranston man with aggressive driving after he allegedly tried to avoid a traffic stop by darting into the Three Guys Smoke Shop parking lot and driving erratically on Atwood Avenue.

Police said Keith F. Robbins, of 575 Dyer Ave., was observed by Ptlmn. Joseph A. McGinn driving on Atwood Avenue not wearing a safety belt. As McGinn approached in an effort to stop the car, Robbins, who was behind the wheel, darted into the4 smoke shop parking lot without using a turn signal.

McGinn kept his eyes on Robbins, who drove through the parking lot and when he apparently though the officer was gone, drove back onto Atwood Avenue "abruptly," McGinn said in his report, and without using a turn signal or yielding to oncoming traffic.

Robbins was then stopped and police soon found his license was suspended for failing to appear on prior driving violation charges.

While in custody, police said Robbins admitted to driving aggressively to avoid the traffic stop.

All told, Robbins was charged with driving with a suspended license and aggressive driving and receivied citations for failing to use a turn signal, failing to yield and operating left of center.
