Cranston man was treated for non-life threatening injuries after he fell asleep at the wheel, flipping his delivery truck as a result, which then skidded on its side for about 100 feet in Narragansett.

Anthony DiChiaro, 27, of 25 Pleasant St., Cranston, then told police that he fell out the passenger-side window before the truck – described as a 2007 white GMC 4500 Dunkin’ Donuts delivery truck – hit a utility pole, snapping it in half.

DiChiaro also allegedly told police that he was not wearing his seatbelt.

Police said the accident occurred at about 4:15 a.m. on Wednesday morning, near the Dunes Club, Narragansett Town Beach and Little Neck Pond. DiChiaro was treated at the scene by the Narragansett Fire Department, and refused further treatment.

According to police, a preliminary investigation of the accident scene confirmed DiChiaro’s account. Police noted that there was extensive damage to the front windshield and roof, and to the passenger side of the truck body.

Because of the damaged utility pole, National Grid was called to the scene. However, an examination of the down electrical wires revealed that none were live, and the company told police that they were safe to move. A 15-foot portion of a stone wall near the pole was also damaged.

The scene was cleared at about 5:32 a.m. At that point, police transported DiChiaro to the Bonnet Shores Cumberland Farms. The truck was towed from the scene by Northup’s.
