Cranston has a large population of Catholics who observe Lent, so it should come as no surprise there's a bevy of restaurants that offer great fish and chips.
Though it's local favorite year-round, there's something about fish and chips that go together and is as much a tradition as the Easter Ham and the Christmas roast.
So we asked our Facebook followers where the best fish and chips in Cranston can be found. There was runaway winner, but a few names kept coming up.
Many chose Stadium Fish and Chips. The family business has been in operation since 1942 and is famous for traditional fish and chips with scratch-made batter and coleslaw.
And then there's Walt's Roast Beef. That's right — Walt's Roast Beef.
"That's the only place in Cranston I will get my fish and chips," said Cheryl Hogan, who said she was brought there by a friend and went with much scepticism but was quickly won over.
Readers also said Edgewood Cafe is worth a visit and so is Tommy's Pizza, which offers a "huge piece" for $10, said Mike Larendeau.
Also worth checking out are the Shriners in Pawtuxet Village and Paula's Place on the Cranston/Warwick line.
With so many choices, it's apparent that good fish and chips in Cranston isn't just a Lenten thing. It's so good, former residents pine for the days of grabbing some close to home.
"One of the things I miss MOST from Cranston and RI in general is fish n chips," said Kathy Horridge Kenney. "Nothing like the RI way of making them in batter. MA doesn't have a clue how to do them correctly."
