The Cranston businessman who admitted in federal court that he cheated the government out of $500,000 in taxes last year has filed for bankruptcy.
WPRI reported that William L'Europa filed for Chapter 13 bankruptcy in court Tuesday, listing his $508,000 mortgage with Coastway Credit Union listed as his only creditor.
According to the Boston Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, L'Europa, 47, of Cranston, a co-operator of McCauley and L'Europa Public Adjusters LLC and PIA Restoration LLC, admitted in court that he underreported business receipts between 2007 and 2010 by nearly $1.8 million. It resulted in an underpayment of federal taxes by more than $500,000.
The matter was investigated by IRS-Criminal Investigation, FBI, ATF, Rhode Island State Police, and the Providence Fire Department Fire Prevention Division.
L'Europa was charged alongside former State Rep. John McCauley, who is serving a 27-month sentence at Fort Devens in Massachusetts.
