The woman found dead in her partially-submerged car in a detention pond behind the Plainfield Pike Walmart has not yet been identified.

Cranston Police released more details about the incident involving the woman, who appears to have hopped a curb and driven through a fence before her car came to a stop upside down in the water.

The incident occurred on a private access road at the northeast corner of the property, said Cranston Police Major Robert W. Ryan.

The woman was traveling south when she hit the curb and drove through the chain-link fence. The car then went down the embankment and rolled onto its roof before coming to a stop in the pond.

The car was spotted by a truck driver making a delivery to the store yesterday around 12:45 p.m. Police did not say when the accident occurred, but it is likely that it happened sometime overnight. The pond is across the street from a row of houses next to Walmart.

Police, fire and the state Medical Examiner's office responded to the scene shortly after the car was spotted by the truck driver.

"The Cranston Police Detective Division continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident," Ryan said.
