The ongoing NBC10 I-Team investigation into a Cranston Police detective out on leave and double dipping has resulted in the police chief ordering that officer to stop working his civilian jobs.
Det. Duc Powers, a forensic detective, has been on full disability since 2007 due to a heart condition, earning his $50,000 salary without working for the Cranston Police Department.
He was deined a disability pension from the State Retirement Board in 2008, according to state records, and his status remains unresolved with the city.
Powers said he wants to come back to work but there is no position that matches his skills available at the department and legally, the city can't force him to come back.
News that Powers had earned paychecks at the State Crime Lab at the University of Rhode Island, teaching as an adjunct professor at the New England Institute of Technology and at the Katherine Gibbs School in Cranston during his leave infuriated the mayor and has led to Police Chief Col. Marco Palombo telling him to "immediately cease all secondary employment until further notice," NBC10 reported.
